Nancy Valko has served on several medical and nursing ethics committees, given workshops around the country on medical ethics issues, served on the board of the St. Louis Down Syndrome Association, and remains active in the field of disability advocacy. In addition, she has appeared on many radio and TV shows for interviews, commentary or debate on medical and ethical issues.

Personally, Valko had a child born with Down Syndrome and a severe heart defect. Her daughter died in 1983. In addition, she has cared for her mother who had Alzheimer's disease and terminal cancer, and an aunt who had terminal pancreatic cancer.

Valko received her nursing license as an RN in 1969 from Mercy Junior College. Her nursing specialties are in oncology (cancer), hemodialysis (kidney machines), intensive care (burn, trauma, medical, surgical and cardiac), home health and hospice. She works full time in an ICU in the St. Louis area.
