Sylvia McSkimming is executive director of Supportive Care of the Dying: A Coalition for Compassionate Care (SCD). This nonprofit organization is a coalition of Catholic health care organizations dedicated to providing optimum support from the community to patient and family during illness and at the end of life, and the bereaved after the patient's death. The Coalition's members have a combined presence in 49 states (comprised of organizations from health care ministries, whether it be a clinic, a hospital, or a long-term care facility).
McSkimming has her PhD in Family Studies from Oregon State University; BSN and MN from Oregon Health Sciences University School of Nursing; Master's degree with a focus on care of children and families with developmental disabilities and life-threatening illnesses; MBA from Marylhurst College in Oregon; post-doctorate certification in Clinical Health Care Ethics, University of Washington; and American Nurse Certification - Certified Nursing Administration Advanced.
In addition to a variety of clinical nursing positions, McSkimming has held positions as Pediatric Nurse Specialist, faculty member in two schools of nursing, coordinator of a Continuing Education Outreach program and director of Nursing, Research, Education, and Quality prior to taking the position of Executive Director for SCD in 1997. She was principal investigator of the research work, Living and Healing During Life-Threatening Illness (1996).
