Michigan Chronology 1993
- The Michigan legislature enacted a temporary ban on assisted suicide.
1994
- The Michigan legislature failed to reach agreement on a bill that would make the temporary ban on assisted suicide indefinite.
- The Michigan Supreme Court upheld the temporary ban on assisted suicide and held that there is no protected right to suicide or suicide assistance in the state or federal constitution.
1995
- The temporary ban on assisted suicide expired.
- The U.S. Supreme Court denied appeals by Jack Kevorkian and the American Civil Liberties Union of the 1994 Michigan Supreme Court decision, thus upholding the Michigan court's decision that there is no constitutional right to suicide or assisted suicide.
1998
- A permanent ban on assisted suicide was enacted by the Michigan legislature and signed into law by the Governor.
- A group known as Merian's Friends submitted enough petition signatures to force a ballot referendum to legalize assisted suicide. The initiative was designated as Proposal B.
- Michigan voters defeated Proposal B by a 71% to 29% margin.
